It's my great pleasure to come over today with our lecturer: Mark Billinghurst to really get to know AR, VR and MR.

AR, VR, and MR technologies not only enable us to see the wonders of science and technology but also make the real world which can be felt and the virtual world which cannot be touched more closely. The emergence of these three technologies has left many people scratching their heads or even mixing them up. They all have different definitions.

After this class, I collected a lot of information on this topic on the Internet.

AR is Augmented Reality or Augmented Reality technology. This technology USES computer technology overlays virtual information on the real world and displays it through devices such as mobile phones and tablet computers to be perceived by people, to realize the incredible fusion of real and virtual and enrich the real world. In short,

it is to "live up" the content of its plane, give the object more information, enhance the three-dimensional sense, enhance the visual effect, and interactive experience.

The common application of AR technology is to scan the objects in the real world by using the mobile phone camera and display the corresponding pictures, audio, and video, 3D models, etc. on the mobile phone through the image recognition technology. Such as some software "AR red envelope" function. Further applications of AR technology are still being explored.

VR is the full name of Virtual Reality, namely Virtual Reality technology, also known as the aura technology, with immersive, interactive, and imaginative characteristics. VR technology combines computer graphics, simulation technology, multimedia technology, artificial intelligence technology, computer network technology, parallel processing technology and sensor technology, a variety of technologies such as simulation of visual, hearing, touch, such as the function of sensory organs, make a person quiet, immersed in the computer-generated virtual world, and can through the real-time communication such as language, gestures, strengthen into the feeling and immersive. Through VR technology, people can not only feel the reality of the real world but also break through the constraints of time and space and feel the wonderful experience of entering the virtual world.

VR technology is widely used. For example, astronauts use VR simulation technology for training. Architects make drawings into 3d virtual buildings for easy experience and modification; Real estate developers allow customers to visit houses as they see them; Virtual stage sets produced by the entertainment industry, and so on.

MR (Mixed Reality) is a further development of virtual reality technology. By introducing the real scene information into the virtual environment, it builds a bridge of interactive feedback information between the virtual world, the real world, and users so as to enhance the sense of the reality of user experience. The key point of MR technology is to interact with the real world and acquire information in a timely manner, so its implementation needs to be in an environment that can interact with various things in the real world. If the environment is virtual, it's VR. If the virtual information presented is simply superimposed on the virtual thing, it is AR. The difference between MR and AR is simple: AR just overlays the virtual environment without paying attention to reality, but MR allows you to see reality through a camera that the naked eye can't.

The interactive feedback between the virtual and reality of MR technology enables people to communicate far apart, which is highly operable. For example, with 5G network support, doctors in two places can perform surgery and give guidance simultaneously, which is of great significance in the medical field.
