#DES 231 Blog 5 :Indigenous Futurism

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

In this session, we have been discussed the topic of Indigenous Futurism in the class. Indigenous Futurism is a significant global topic, and it is relating to our future.

Indigenous Futurism envisions narrative and environment—built and natural—to achieve architectural sovereignty, guided by technology, alternative worlds, science fiction, and time studies. The speculative design project with the theme of Aboriginal Futurism helps us to think critically about the traditions, revolutions and reconstruction practices in our built environment.

The inheritance of culture is the most important to all different groups or races in the world. They symbolize a belief and value of one's own, and every culture is irreplaceable. In the class, our lecturer shared a story about herself. She is a native of Mexico and New Zealand is the fifth country she has experienced. The lifestyle of each place gives her a different life experience. These experiences in life allowed her to enrich her vision and see the culture we can't see. She is an excellent indigenous futurist.

These are some of the characteristics of indigenous culture that I have found.

This tribal elder in an emerald suit wears a matching lip plate, a body decoration found in Ethiopia's Suri and Mursi tribes.

The drape of the border tribe is the traditional dress of the shepherds of Lesotho in South Africa. They graze on the plateau all year round, and their bright and thick blankets and boots help protect their bodies from the cold.

In the 21st century, advanced technology allows us to understand more cultural diversity in the world. People's lifestyles have also become common, because we have all begun to use the same Internet platform, and the way to obtain resources has become more concentrated. For example, we use Google for things we don't know, and YouTube when we need to watch videos, the most popular entertainment social software at the moment, Tik-Tok. Indeed, our lives have become richer, and the distance between people has become closer. We are all used to the process of seeking common ground while reserving differences. This is the inherent thinking of our human beings. However, some remote places will widen our gap, because there are still many tribes and aboriginals in this world who do not use modern technology, and many of their lifestyles remain primitive. But we are also human beings, and we are also a community. Human civilization contains many cultural thoughts of indigenous people. If we record their civilization in one way, I think the best way is to represent their culture through unique architecture. Of course, we will go through many tests in the future. When we come up with such a concept, I think it is time for the messengers of modern civilization to interview and communicate with these cultural groups with unique styles in the world.
