#DES 231 Blog 3 Transition Design

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

Blog 3

In this session, we have discussed the critical features of Transition design and the strengths/limitations of this mode design.

The concept I learnt from Transition design is central to various contemporary discourses and initiatives concerned with how change manifests and can be catalyzed and directed in complex systems. However, the framework map shows the critical structure of transition design.

- 1) Vision; Are we long enough to make accurate predictions about our future development goals? Most of the time, we focus on solving the current problem, but there is no end in sight. How long can such a design last? So we should constantly discuss and improve. We all have different experiences of life and see things in different ways. When we use integration and communication, we will have a better version.

- 2) Theories of Change;

We have always thought that the impact of solutions can be controlled and anticipated. The inventors of the microwave oven wanted to reduce the time it takes to heat food. Still, they did not realize that the invention reinvented the culture of human eating and even indirectly contributed to the problem of obesity.

- 3) Mindset & Posture;

Each person's Worldview represents the beliefs, values, assumptions, and expectations they were raised with. Often this has an unintended impact on problem discovery and problem-solving.

- 4) New Ways of Designing-

In my opinion, the new design method is actually changed by changing the social system or human lifestyle. Twenty years ago, we did not have the idea of speculative design, nor did we have the proper term for transitional design. The new design is a kind of change, a type of progress of the times. Suppose we are looking for unique design methods today. In that case, we need to jump out of our comfortable life circle and go to different places to experience life to have a unique understanding and inspiration.

The difference between speculative design and transition design.

*The Future vertebral body

Speculative design is a discourse practice based on critical thinking and dialogue, questioning design practice (and its modernist definition). However, the speculative design method takes a critical approach one step further, moving towards the imagination and vision of possible scenarios.

Transition design is a designer rethinking alternative products, systems and the world. He needs to make a project more plan and futuristic based on critical design. This includes the influence of social phenomena, which is scientific and futuristic. The purpose of over-design is to hope that we can achieve a better transformation. This is also one of the needs of our future ecological development.
